Beating the Heat

This was a look from a few weeks back when Edmonton got hit with really high temperatures and a pretty healthy dose of humidity (so, basically, it was hellish for me and I spent the better part of three days being incredibly cranky and uncomfortable). It's weird looking back these now because it's deliciously chilly and crisp out now.

But I digress, this is me trying to beat the heat. And while the colour palette is dark this top and pants are both made from really lightweight and very breathable fabric and so I did manage to stay moderately cool. Take that summer!

In other news, I attended another show at Western Canadian Fashion Week.

Bano eeMee, Suka Clothing, and LUXX Ready-to-Wear all put on inspired shows. Suka was especially stunning (long live harness-esque details!).

Sweater Weather

It’s starting to get darker earlier and earlier so I was unable to get natural light for these photos (oops), which is really a shame because OASAP sent me to this perfect-for-fall sweater and gorgeous necklace and I wish I’d gotten some better shots of them. But such is life and you’re getting treated to one half of my home library instead.

Don't worry though, there will soon be some more interesting backgrounds in my photos because, in a little over a week, I'm heading back to my second home, New Haven, Connecticut (followed by a week in NYC), for the North Eastern Conference on British Studies followed by an extended visit with all my grad school friends.

Western Canadian Fashion Week

Over the weekend I attended a show for Western Canadian Fashion Week. And here’s what I wore.

coat: ASOS / pants: Simons / shoes: not sure, gift from my mother / shirt: Zara / necklace: Monserat de Lucca / purse: Michael Kors

Here are a few shots from the show. Susanna Pearcey’s collection was really lovely, as was this great pattern mixing, frilly number and a lovely jacket.

Daytime Glitz

The more times I wear this top, the more I am convinced that it’s one of the most awesome things I own. Who doesn’t value a little daytime glitz? Seriously, who? Especially when it also involves leopard loafers?

In other news, I finally finished perfecting my paper for the upcoming North Eastern Conference on British Studies. I am actually surprisingly happy with the end result…which, for me is odd, because I tend to agonize over conference papers and continue tweaking them right up until the day before I present them.

The Bike Witch

While I am not at all sad that summer will soon be ending, I am sad that it means I’ll be putting my bike away in storage for the winter soon. Boo. I’ve loved around cruising around on this thing and it will be a sad good-bye.

Gazebo Style

My helpmeet and I went out for a little dinner date last week and stumbled across this really cute little gazebo…I love discovering little bits of my city that I never knew were there – not to mention the delicious new restaurant we tried out!

Cultural and Social History

Another perfect fall/summer day: strolling around Edmonton’s legislative grounds.

In other news, my most recent article just came out in print in the Journal of Cultural and Social History! It's a dissertation chapter that I reworked and took on the conference circuit last year - a little synopsis is here. Well, it will be as soon as they update their website!

Also, did I mention that my parents got me a shark tooth necklace on their most recent foray to Hawaii?

Party Pants

I’m not really one for prints normally but I am head over heels with these printed pants from Zara – I have been practically living in them for the past few weeks! Have you recently acquired any items that you can’t image living without now?

Boozy Times

My very best friend in the whole world was visiting from Vancouver a while back and I wore this to hit the town with her. Things got a little boozy. Okay, a lot boozy. But it was an awesomely fun time.

I'm a Part-Time Party Machine

This is what I recently wore to my friend’s wedding – I had bought a dress specifically for the occasion but at the last minute decided that this black maxi skirt and blouse from OASAP was simply more me.

Plus it’s got two lengthy openings in it which means that when I hit the dance floor (as I invariably do after a few cocktails) and start twirling the fabric flies and twirls with me. That’s right, it’s the perfect accessory for making a spectacle out of yourself. Maybe I shouldn’t be invited to any more weddings…

Black Summer

Meet my new favourite summer outfit (my passionate dedication to black also heavily asserts itself). I’m in love.
