Oscar Roundup

I wanted so badly to have a clever word-play title for this but I'm dangerously under-caffinated and my wits have failed me. Anyhoo, I had a delightful Oscar evening at a fancy dress Oscar party with a bunch of other Yalies at which we all drank some amazing cocktails and bitched about fellow Yale student James Franco and his crap-tacular hosting skills (photos to come), yeah, we're catty like that in the Ivies (actually, I'm seriously not and as a Canadian, union-loving, universal-health care enthusiast, near-socialist I sort of hate being lumped in with the Ivy League crew). I hope you all had a similarly enjoyable evening and now onto the fashion!

Unless noted, all images are from style.com

Best Dressed

Sharon Stone in...(I actually don't know the designer) - she looks all kinds of witchy and fun and I love it

Sandra Bullock in Vera Wang - wow, just wow

Natalie Portman in Rodarte - I'm so so happy she showed up in Rodarte (the Mulleavy sisters of course costumed Black Swan) and I think this is just the best awards season dress she's had so far

Mila Kunis in Elie Saab - the color, the daring (somewhat boob-tastic) cut, the fit...it's just perfect

Michelle Williams in Chanel - I loved how demure and sparkly this was...and it was such an improvement over that Valentino daisy mess...

Jennifer Lawrence in Calvin Klein - yowzas! Straight up sexy and I love that she did almost no jewelry and light makeup

Hilary Swank in Gucci - I don't know...I like things that sparkle and I totally think she's working this

Helena Bonham Carter in Colleen Atwood - you all know how much I adore Bon-Carter and this is no exception...especially since she wore the design of the gal who actually won for best costume and was super snarky to Ryan Seacrest on the E! pre-show when he asked about her usually wacky style and she was all like "well Ryan, tonight is really about film and not designers and fashion" (okay, so that's not an actual quote but same s**t different pile)...

Hailey Steinfeld in Marchesa - so pretty and age appropriate, loved it!

Cate Blanchett in Givenchy - I'll admit I was on the fence about this (it kind of looks like her breasts are hatching out of an Easter egg) but the architecture of the gown is perfect and, really, who else could pull this off?

Annette Bening in Naeem Khan - so shiny and sparkly and pretty

Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive - of all Ms. Hathway's hosting gowns this was my favorite

Slightly Less Than Stellar

Reese Witherspoon in Armani Prive - she kind of looked like a Barbie...and I really love Barbie but I just could not get behind this

Melissa Leo in Marc Bouwer - wow, just wow

Marisa Tomei in Lily et Cie 1950 Charles James couture gown - this theoretically would be something I love (tulle! black! (I've actually since found out it's navy but same thing) satin!) but sadly no...it just doesn't fit her right and needs way better accessories

Jennifer Hudson in Versace - is it just me or is this doing odd things to her boobs?

Halle Berry in Marchesa - well, at least she showed up in actual clothes...

Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein - what in the what?

Amy Adams in L'Wren Scott - I loved this dress (sequins! navy! cap sleeves! sexy slit!), but seriously the necklace did it in

Florence Welch in vintage Valentino - I want to like this, I really do but (aside from the fact that she seems addicted to rocking this washed out lace shade at every event) with the hair and the ruffles it's all Little House on the Prairie meets some weird Oregon Trail-playing cult and I kind of wish that someone who is obviously SO creative would, you know, actually try to be creative sartorially

Mila Kunis has been SO on this season!! She needs to keep who ever has been styling her. Reese... Man, I loved that hair; but the dress is bad bridesmaid rolled around an overdone prom dress. And I happened to like Melissa Leo.

I Like Sandra Bullocks dress the best ! This was very well written and I enjoy your commentary.

haha i love reading your comments. mila kunis and hailey looked amazing!!

p.s. i think the title you ending up using is perfect (:

Oh man, Mila Kunis looked SPECTACULAR. No one could even compare! The color, the lace, everything, was just perfect. And yeah, Jennifer Hudson's boobs were all squashy. and not in the good way. (wait, there's a good way for boobs to be squashy?)

I think Hailey Steinfeld is the best dressed - so cute and sweet!!

I don't understand Cate Blanchett in the Givenchy dress. It looks like a weird apron to me.

Chic on the Cheap

I totally agree with you that Amy Adams needed to ditch that necklace! To me, Hailee rocked it because she stayed age appropriate, unlike so many other stars. And Natalie Portman truly had the pregnant glow!

Mila Kunis looked amazing!

I agree with most of your likes but also loved some of your dislikes. The only one I really hated was Jennifer Lawrence, she looked like she was on Baywatch. x

I love the Elie Saab dress Mila is wearing, boob-tastic really made me laugh ;)

I love Natalie Portman!! She is spectacular in that dress. Great photos all around!

Too funny about James Franco... he should keep his day job.

This is a great fashion round-up.

And though it pains me to say this, because I love her, I thought Anne Hathaway wasn't much better than James Franco. Kinda lame.

I had a great evening, I've been waiting for this red carpet walk for a while..... well, I was a bit sissapointed by Natalie Portman.
Now, Michelle William and Mila Kunis looked beautiful and I saw many others that were ....'OK'
I guess I had VERY high expectations but one that surprised me (not sure if in a good or bad way) was Cate Blanchett.

I totally agree. Mila and Cate looked amazing! I also loved Michelle's hair and the make up:) happy Tuesday, darling

I loved Sandra Bullock's make up - the red lipstick with the red dress is a bit unusual but it looked amazing. Gwyneth Paltrow's dress looks like the fabric version of her hair - it made her look like she was just a rectangular block of silvery-blonde. I'm really loving Jennifer Lawrence's simple dress - like Emma Stone's at the Golden Globes, there's something really refreshing about the plain fabric and simple but beautiful cut. I love it when celebrities go against the curve on the red carpet.

I really like your fashion round-ups, love the way you comment on them and how you cover the topic so I was extremely happy to see you had done the oscars. Sandra Bullock is flawless, perfect, it was a no brainer. And laughed and had to agree with what you say about Jennifer Hudson's boobs WTF!!!??

Bonnie said...

We disagree on a ton here, but I must say that Cate Blanchett's gown makes me puke, I want Mila Kunis to be my girlfriend, Sandra Bullock's boobs looked saggy in a dress that did not fit her chest, Reese Witherspoon actually looked good for once, and I spent the whole time wondering where Hilary Swank hid her penis.

Hahaha.. I disagree with you on quite a few but that's the fun of fashion, everyone disagrees with everyone else making it all the more interesting.
Love your commentary! I think poor Jennifer's boobs ain't looking too hot cause she lost a ton of weight quickly and not really because of her dress... though it isn't helping conceal the issue either ;)
And Florence Welch looks like her boring dress finally got the better of her. She looks like she's falling asleep on herself in that pic :D

Mila, Halle, and Natalie were my top favorite this year. Each dress was so unique and stunning. Sigh. Like princesses. Oh, and of course Anne was a vision in every outfit she had as well. :)

James was a terrible host and kind of ruined the whole show for me. I felt bad for Anne who was clearly trying her hardest to keep it all afloat...

i agree with the majority of your choices. mila, cate, hilary, sandra, michelle--all looked wonderful!

i thought halle looked great (love marchesa) and would have put annette on the not-so-best dressed list.

I actually liked Reese Witherspoon's dress. Jennifer Hudson's boobs, however, I did not like!

I like the one of N.Portman, and I also like how S.Johansson looked! <3

Cate Blanchet was my pick by a mile. I LOVE that dress, and her styling. I give second place to Michelle Williams, but a lot of that is due to genetics and a rad hair style.

Great post! I actually really liked Halle's dress but I'm definitely with you on the necklace for Amy! Why? WHY???

Great post and comments on the dresses of the night. You are so right about J Hudson's boobs...what is going on there!? She has been looking so great with her weight loss and then she wears that neckline. Such a shame.

maggeygrace said...

I would have to say that Florence was my favorite. It looks sooooo gorgeous. J Hudson is beautiful, but I do wish she hadn't worn THAT dress specifically!

I think Hailey looked adorable and loved the fact that she changed into flats later!
