Witchy

Happy Halloween everyone!!!!! I hope everyone has a perfectly witchy day (I know I will – my trip to Fort Worth was fantastic (well, except for getting redirected to Pittsburgh yesterday on the way home and having to spend the night there then a further 6 hours hanging around the airport trying to get a flight home) and now I am looking forward to an evening of scary movies and a rager of a Halloween/Guy Fawkes Day party this weekend). I am unfortunately not teaching today but I hope at least a few of my students don costumes to their other classes today.

This look is right before I left for Fort Worth but I figured it was appropriate for today because it has a sort of witch vibe to it.

Cozy

This is fast becoming one of my favorite transitional fall looks. I’ve been wearing this a lot on Mondays and Fridays – the days I don’t teach but do have a ton of running around to do on campus alongside working shifts at the my part time library job. The capri pants and navy t-shirt are perfect for the warm weather of the afternoon and the chunky knit cardigan grounds it all nicely in fall.

Also, the panel yesterday was awesome! One of my dissertation committee members even turned up. I had a good crowd of 15 or so and even though I got peppered with some pretty tough questions I feel like I answered them well. Then I ran into Robo Cop (aka Peter Weller) in the hallway near the free coffee area. It was awesome. I am going to try to snap a photo of him tomorrow. He's a doctoral student at UCLA now so he's here doing the academic thing).

The Rhetoric and Reality of Dueling

Is it me or does fall lend itself nicely to all kinds of great teaching outfits? Like this little number, for example…

P.S. I'm about 4 hours away from my presentation at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference ... wish me luck!

Flying High

I’m off to Dallas, Fort Worth this afternoon for a conference so this is a look from a few days ago because I usually look pretty sloppy when I fly. What can I say, that’s just how I roll. But I figured you should be saved the horror of it.

I am really looking forward to the conference though! Several close friends and colleagues that I haven’t seen in a while will be there, my paper is written and ready to be presented, the program looks great, and I am anticipating lots of dinner and drinks with people and maybe even a few hours to explore outside the conference.

I’ll be posting some older looks while I’m away because I’ll be sans photographer but I hope to stay caught up on all your blogs while enjoying the many pleasures of Dallas.

It’s giveaway time people!!!! Get excited! The lovely folks at Shabby Apple have offered readers of Sartorial Sidelines a chic accessory to be chosen by yours truly. After weighing the options (not an easy task; seriously, Shabby Apple has the cutest stuff), I’ve selected the You’re All Mad cuff, a gorgeous suede piece with a bit of edge.

If you want to enter the rules are pretty simple: You must be a follower of Sartorial Sidelines via Blogger and you must “like” Shabby Apple on Facebook. LEAVE A COMMENT TELLING ME YOU'VE DONE THESE THINGS FOR 1 ENTRY!

For extra entries, “like” Sartorial Sidelines on Facebook, follow Sartorial Sidelines on Twitter, follow Sartorial Sidelines on Bloglovin’, follow Shabby Apple on Twitter, and follow the Shabby Apple blog.

So, after making a comment to be entered once (and liking Shabby Apple and following Sartorial Sidelines via Blogger), please leave a separate comment for each entry. The contest is open to US readers only (sorry fellow Canucks, I’m an ex-pat now and get to play by different rules).

The contest is open until November 3, when I will be drawing a winner the old timey way … and, yes, that does involve names in a hat.

Calling All Halloweenies!

As I’ve shared here many, many times, I am a Halloween junkie. Or a Halloweenie, as I like to refer to myself. And, as I pack for my trip to Dallas and put the finishing touches on my conference paper, I'm reflecting on Halloweens past.

This year I will be celebrating late due to a scheduling conflict but I am eagerly awaiting my late-Halloween/Guy Fawke’s Day party on November and turning my mind to thoughts of decorative items. Like these gems from etsy.

Cobalt

Remember when I mentioned I was having a love affair with cobalt blue? Yeah, I wasn’t messing around. I’m seriously considering packing this blouse to take along to my upcoming conference in Dallas, Fort Worth. Wouldn’t you want to hear a paper about the rhetoric and reality of the gentlemanly duel in early modern England coming from someone in this top?

It's a Suit...For a Lady. A Lady Suit.

Please don't ask me to explain the title of this post. I can't. Really. Onwards and upwards.

As I’m sure you’ve all noticed, this grey blazer is quickly becoming one of my favorite items. I can’t help it – I feel so authoritative when I wear it to teach, especially paired with this new satchel style bag from Target. This is how one teaches the rise of Athenian imperialism in style. Lesson learned.

I’m seriously full on obsessed with blazers and all the ways to wear them this fall…and evidenced by my latest Polyvore doodlings.

Bestial

I finally got a copy of my recently published article in the mail and just had to snap a few glam shots!

Then I promptly stifled my excitement and prepared for a day of lecture, meeting with students, and attending the British Historical Studies Colloquium for a fascinating paper and rousing discussion followed by dinner with my fellow British historians. Long but fun days call for a thick cardigan in my book … and an interesting statement necklace.

Entrenched

After a few days of warmth, the temperatures are definitely starting to drop here. I’ve been spending the last few nights curled up in front of my fireplace (did I mention my sweet new apartment has a working fireplace?) with a cup of tea and a pile of midterms on the history of ancient Greece to grade … and I’ve really enjoyed every second of it. During the day I venture out in light weight, yet still warm, pieces like this Michael Kors trench to ward of the chill. Of course a pop of leopard print is involved as well.
