It Rained, I Shopped

I recently did a little shopping at TJ Maxx and found some great jeans and a leopard infinity scarf.

Then it rained.

But then my helpmeet had this awesome shirt printed for me. So it’s all good.

And today I start auditing a class co-taught by my adviser called Renaissance Ways with Words, or RW3. So I’m in nerd heaven.

What the Cuff (Sorry, I Couldn't Resist)

I love me a good cuff … I would say cuffs are my number 1 accessory. I own several and rarely leave the house without one. And because it’s often far too hot to wear them in the summer, this is yet one more reason why I am jazzed for the return of fall.

Rock You Like a Hurricane (How Has That Not Been Used Yet?)

Hurricane Irene hit over the weekend – by the time it reached New Haven it had been downgraded to a tropical storm but it was still pretty crazy. Damage was minimal (thankfully) but a few stately old trees were uprooted, including a lovely one on the grounds of building that, unfortunately, toppled over onto someone’s car. Yikes. I had some friends over for wine, sangria, and poker and then stayed up until 5 am so that I would have a chance to see a bit of the storm (it hit between 4 am and 11 am). I even threw on my rubber boots and a rain jacket and went outside for 20 minutes to really hear the roaring wind and feel the lashing rain. I know it sounds a little nuts but I just couldn’t restrain myself. I hope everyone else weathered the storm well and emerged unscathed. And now, onwards and upwards!

I am so ready for fall fashion people! So, so ready. The Missoni for Target look book is feeding my fall-fueled dreams of the fashion trends to come this season.

Classes start up here soon (in 2 days actually, yikes) and I’m already planning my wardrobe for teaching Ancient Greek history, and it will definitely include this sequin t-shirt and a whole mess of blazers. Is anyone else as excited as me for the onset of fall?

Wood Nymph

The romantic pleating and chiffon on this skirt make me think of wood nymphs and other sprites. The blazer brings it back a little from a more ethereal place, I think.

The Nymph's Reply – Walter Ralegh

If all the world and love were young,
And truth in every shepherd's tongue,
These pretty pleasures might me move
To live with thee and be thy love.

Time drives the flocks from field to fold,
When rivers rage and rocks grow cold,
And Philomel becometh dumb;
The rest complains of cares to come.

The flowers do fade, and wanton fields
To wayward winter reckoning yields;
A honey tongue, a heart of gall,
Is fancy's spring, but sorrow’s fall.

Thy gowns, thy shoes, thy beds of roses,
Thy cap, thy kirtle, and thy posies
Soon break, soon wither, soon forgotten,
In folly ripe, in reason rotten.

Thy belt of straw and ivy buds,
The coral clasps and amber studs,
All these in me no means can move
To come to thee and be thy love.

But could youth last and love still breed,
Had joys no date nor age no need,
Then these delights my mind might move
To live with thee and be thy love.

Wino

This is me touring a vineyard here in Connecticut and getting really excited about it. I can’t help it. I love wine. Maybe too much.

Let's be friends on Facebook too ... all sorts of content winds up there that I never share here. Enticing, no?

Mall Walker

Hittin’ the mall for some window shopping. I like to keep things classy whilst I perambulate the Stamford mall … it makes me feel better about my choices in life.

In other news, yesterday I felt the aftershocks/tremors of the earthquake that hit Virginia and the DC area. It was my second earthquake in 18 months … last February when I was living in LA I was awakened at 3 am by a full on, everything shaking earthquake. It was unsettling then and yesterday it was just odd when the library began shaking and I realized by chair was vibrating. Earthquakes are pretty low on my threat list in Connecticut.

Today I have a very exciting meeting with my adviser planned at 5 pm - I will be unveiling the finished dissertation (okay, not really unveiling because he's already seen most of it but I still plan to throw a flourish and a few "ta das" into it) and then discussing the stressful hell that is the academic job market. Wish me luck!

Blue

I wish I wore more blue…I really do (although I did recently acquire a brilliantly blue top with some adorable ruffles at the neckline). It’s such an elegant color.

But I’m pretty happy in my grey jumper too.

Also, let’s keep the Facebook love a rollin’ … you like me here (I hope), so “like” me there and let’s be Facebook BFFs.

Lace: A Gentlemen's Club (According to the Sign)

Remember how I was saying that we were taking my mother-in-law for a day trip to NYC? Well, we did. I got a sunburn waiting around outside all day for some stupid tour bus (hate those things by the way) and went to the sewer that is Times Square for the fiftieth time to marvel at all the tourists thinking that this was the ultimate New York experience. But I’m not bitter. Highlights of the day included some great night time photography from the Top of the Rock, glam shots of me being a grumpus outside of Lace: A Gentlemen’s Club in Times Square (yeah, there's no gentlemen in there), and a chance encounter with a certain Mr. Stephen Colbert.

(I'm cranky because a) I'm sunburned b) I just paid $5 for a Vitamin Water c) I hate Times Square d) I dislike smut peddlers e) I'm generally just cranky a good 5 hours or so out of every day
