Emerald

My new dress from ModCloth arrived a few days ago, just in time for spring and summer – I just love the emerald shade. While there was still a bit of a chill in the air when I wore it for these photos (hence the tights and cardigan), I anticipate getting a lot of wear out of this little number this season!

It Was a Sad Goodbye

It’s now officially too warm for this jacket so I took it out for one final spin before it goes into storage for the summer…I’m going to miss it.

The Joys of Research

This plaid top was in heavy rotation for me last year and then I sort of forgot about it only to rediscover it in my closet. Paired with jeans, booties, and a leather jacket it was perfect for hitting the library in after work last week. I’m working on the final set of proofs for my forthcoming article (based on a chapter of my dissertation – the first piece of the project to be published!) and wanted to check a few things before I submitted the final draft. One of the individuals that I focus on in the article, Lucy Mervyn, was involved in a legal scuffle (it’s referenced in some of her correspondence that I was using for the article) and I’ve been trying for about three years (ah, the joys of research) to pin down the particulars of the case and thought I’d give it one more go before the submission for publication deadline.

The Back-Up Plan

Regular readers are probably aware that I wear these studded Steve Madden boots an obscene amount – they’re my go-to shoes. Incredibly comfy and so perfectly me, I pair them with just about everything. Well, last week I had a mild panic attack about the fact that I wear them so frequently and they will probably start to fall apart at some point in the near future at this rate but, by then, they would likely not be “on trend” anymore and, therefore, might not be easily replaceable. So I dashed out, somewhat compulsively, to my local mall and bought the last pair in my size that were in stock to squirrel away in my closet for the day when my current pair dies.

Do you ever buy multiples of favoured clothing items in the interest of having a back-up article or pair of something?

Lucky Charm

I used to wear this blouse pretty regularly last year – it was sort of a conference staple for me as I always packed it when I was traveling to academic conferences and usually wore it to present, sort of a lucky sartorial charm I suppose. Anyways, I’m starting to work on developing a new paper for a conference this fall (something on violence, mediation, and reconciliation in early modern English local society) and decided to dust off this baby for inspiration.

Terror and Erebus

I recently paid a visit to the Royal Alberta Museum to see an exhibit on Arctic exploration and, more specifically, the ill-fated voyage of Sir John Franklin and the ships Terror and Erebus. If I hadn’t decided to pursue early modern English social and gender history for my PhD I would have studied nineteenth century British naval history with a focus on Arctic exploration. I’m obsessed with the Franklin expedition and have devoured everything ever written on it so, needless to say, the exhibit was a treat for me. The windstorm that I tried to snap photos in after leaving the museum was not. Also, it was not actually all that cold but I was getting over a head cold when I went and generally felt pretty miserable so I'm wearing a lot of layers. Oh well, you win some, you lose some.
