Angry Face

This blouse with its adorable cat print never fails to put a smile on my face (not in these photos though - this is my angry face. And I wear it a lot). Even when I’m drowning in a sea of unpacking, work meetings to see to, and a stack of world history lectures to write in advance of my teaching gig this January.

And, for anyone interested in my academic activities as a historian, I was featured on the American Historical Association's website yesterday - you can read the feature here.

Leather Loves

I think I’ve recently mentioned my all-consuming love for faux leather accents this fall?

Leather Loves

Are you into this fall’s faux leather accents?

In other local happenings news, I recently attended an event celebrating the launch of AMOR jewelry and Suka Clothing's new collections at Edmonton’s own Bamboo Ballroom – check out the blog on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for more on that...BTW, it was amazing and the clothing was perfection.

In unrelated to fashion news - I was featured in the American Historical Association's Member Spotlight this week! You can check it out here and learn all about my work as a historian and academic.

Winter Warmth

Chilly weather means the return of my thrifted wool skirt originally from J Crew. This red number is the perfect fall piece and works great in the office. And a recent Zara purchase (I’m nuts for the little faux leather shoulder bits) is the ideal top to pair with it.

In unrelated news, I was recently informed that an article I submitted for publication consideration has been accepted! The article is based on a chapter of my dissertation and I've been working on it since last December so I am pretty pleased that it will be published.

Preparations for my January teaching gig are also in full swing - I've written upwards of 7 lectures so far (33 need to be written in total but I feel really good about having made a start of it so early).

Weirdo

I realize that this sounds a little bizarre but I am a big fan of wearing skirts and dresses in cold weather whereas I prefer pants in summer (and, yes, these photos were taken just before the massive snow dump that hit Edmonton). Weird, right? Anyways, now that colder weather is upon us, I love being able to toss on some thick tights and a warm jacket and pair it all with a dress. Like this sequin number that I wore as a skirt by adding a layered shirt over top of. I was going for lunch/tea at Edmonton’s historical Rutherford House (the place where I got married, BTW) with the awesomely fun Sandy of The Pretty Secrets.

Sequins are acceptable for tea, right?

Maxi Me

I’m a big fan of layering. A big fan. And not being afraid to toss on some warm tights and a layered sweater, jacket, scarf combo means I can keep wearing this maxi skirt all year round. Only it got kind of slushy and gross here so I think I may be hooped. Screw you too universe, screw you too.

Let the Great Experiment Begin

So I have this “dress” that’s really WAY too short to actually be worn as a dress. So I’m experimenting with tucking it into my pants and wearing it as a shirt. I think the experiment is pretty successful.

Thankful

This is pretty late but I wore this dress to Thanksgiving back in mid-October. I’m thankful that I own this dress…which is currently the most favoured item in my closet. I’m also thankful for all my awesome friends back in Connecticut, one of whom bought me these rad smoking slippers from Target and mailed them to me. And I’m thankful for Thanksgiving itself, which affords me the opportunity to work on my day drunk.

More Moving

Remember what I said yesterday about comfortable dressing while I move? Well this is another hit of that.

jeans: Urban Outfitters / blouse: H&M / cardigan: H&M / shoes: Aldo / necklace: the Bay

I am pretty much settled into my new apartment now though. Which is good because Edmonton just got slammed with the HUGE dump of snow which means I can now look forward to spending a quiet weekend at home, snowed in.

The Comfortable Mover

If you follow me on Facebook and Twitter you know that I am moving right now. And moving sucks. So I’m opting for comfortable clothes that I don’t have to think a lot about. Like boots and a blazer. Easy.

pants: RW Winter and Co. / blouse: Theory / blazer: F21 / necklace: Monserat de Lucca via Shopbop / boots: Aldo / ring: H&M

In unrelated news, I've started writing lectures for the class that I'll be teaching in January. I am anticipating hitting the annual American Historical Association conference in January in New Orleans and will still be juggling my 50+ hours a week job and so I thought it would be a good idea to get a head start on lecture writing so that I am not totally overwhelmed in January. And, in order to hopefully boost my productivity, some academic friends and I have started a little online work collective. They're based in London and New Haven and are hard at work on job applications and dissertation writing and so we created a Google doc with work schedules for ourselves and we're going to log hours and monitor each other so that we all stick with our work plan goals. Let the great experiment begin!

Veggie Burger Delight

I wore this earlier this month to a dinner with a fellow local blogger (the stunning Marie a la Mode) at which I ingested what was perhaps the most delicious veggie burger I have ever eaten in my life. And I’ve eaten a lot of different veggie burgers at a lot of different places, so that’s no shallow compliment. The Next Act Pub in Edmonton. Order the veggie burger. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.
