Witchy
It’s official, even though this dress has been in my closet for a few months now and I definitely don’t wear it as often as I’d like, this is my absolutely favourite thing in my wardrobe. It’s got all my favourite things: faux leather, a little Peter Pan collar, and, best of all, it’s black and a little on the witchy side.

Pour Me a Drink
Once again, it’s cocktail o’clock (also as martini time). Thank Jeebus. After work cocktails with a friend also gives me an opportunity to come home from work and swap out my work purse for my beloved ASOS clutch, which I never seem to get enough opportunities to use.

Stud
It’s the return of my all time favourite blazer! I wore this to work and one of my co-workers said I looked like an extra from Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. I’d have to agree. And that makes this blazer even more awesome.

Glitter and Studs
I’ve decided that, even though a tenure track job at a research institution seems less and less likely for me, I want to continue teaching the odd class if my full time work schedule will allow it. I really do enjoy it. And I love it that much more when I get to wear this awesome studded collar dress. I love lecturing in this baby. Love it.

Review
The lovely folks at Eshakti sent me a frock to review recently and, from their vast selection, I chose this little number. It’s both black and features a bold bit of colour. Oh, and it has pockets. And I think we all know my feelings on the awesomeness of dresses with pockets. I chose to have to have it custom sized to my measurements (my favourite aspect of Eshakti’s service) so it fits like a glove. I couldn’t be happier – thanks Eshakti!

The Glories of the Academic Job Market
So my hopes for an academic job this year (half-hearted at best because I am genuinely happy in my current non-academic job – I see it as very much a potential career that could give me a lot of fulfillment) were dashed back in January. Two tenure track job interviews in New Orleans at the most recent AHA conference and nothing.
I still have a post doc in the works (one offer on the table and waiting to hear about another) but I am resolved at this point to decline both. The reality is that my chances of getting a job in my field are only ever 20% at best and, according to all the recent reports I’ve read, most people don’t get that tenure track job until they’re into their 40s. I feel really, truly lucky to have gotten a stable, well-paying, lively non-academic job and I’m convinced that I should not jeopardize that for a post doc that will end in two years with no possibility of a job at the end.
Decisions, decisions. That’s why I blocked out my face in these photos from way back in mid-January. I’d spent the better part of the afternoon alternating between crying and laughing followed by the consuming of alcohol. Generally I just stressed myself out to an insane degree. So no face. Trust me, it was an ugly, sad face.

Back in Black
To be fair I’m not really “back” in black because I’m in black most of the time but whatever. It should count for something though that I really did pile on the black in this look … and the studs … and the faux leather.

Humanism
This is a recent teaching outfit – I think I was lecturing on Castiglione’s Book of the Courtier and Renaissance humanism more broadly. I will definitely be wearing this to teach again, I think it’s a pretty perfect look for standing in front of 40 students and trying to hold their attention.

Red Lacquered
I picked up these red lacquered jeans on a little Boxing Day shopping excursion and this is the first time I busted them out. I have to admit, I’m still not totally sold on them (you guys, they make a super weird rustling sound when I move in them – totally destroys the element of stealth that I like to possess in my movements). But I think they do work well paired with a sheer black blouse.
