Last night marked the Met's annual gala to kick off the new exhibition in the Costume Institute (this year's exhibition, entitled Impossible Conversations, celebrates Prada and Schiaparelli). Termed the Oscar's of the fashion world, Vogue live streamed last night's red carpet arrivals and, while I personally don't think the gowns were comparable to last year's gala (the theme of last year's exhibit was, of course, Alexander McQueen, and so the red carpet for the gala was, in many senses, incredibly theatrical in a way that this year's simply wasn't) there were many stunning gowns that ran the gambit from elegant to daring with everything in between. Here are a few that stood out for me the most.
Claire Danes - ignoring the odd facial expression here, I think this is just so delightfully retro and I love the pop of color that the clutch adds
Amy Poehler - this is such a wonderfully witchy and dramatic dress, I love it on her
Bianca Brandolini D'Adda - many a Byzantine empress would covet this gown
Carey Mulligan - this is pretty much just perfection
Cate Blanchett - so dramatic, the perfect McQueen gown
Rihanna looking sleek and sexy in Tom Ford
Dianna Agron - this color is amazing on her
I was trying to find a picture that really did this gown justice, it was so sleek and edgy and sexy, I loved it
Lea Michele - talk about being sleek and sexy!
Lena Dunham and Hamish Bowles - so I sort of hated the first two episodes of Girls on HBO but I'm glad I stuck with the series because I'm pretty into it now and, by extension, sort of love Lena Dunham. And I adore that Hamish Bowles picked out her pumps for her, they work so well with the green dress
Solange Knowles - I have nothing but respect for people who can pull off a gorgeous canary gown and Solange here totally nailed it
What were your favorite fashion statements from last night?

I loved Solange's dress, as well as Gwyneth's and Rihanna's. There were some hits but also some misses, some really bad ones!
Lovely picks! I think I like Amy P's the best.
I wasn't a big fan of Girls at first too, until I saw the episodes a few more times...

What Lola Wants
i was obsessed watching this--thanks for hooking me up with the link!
I have only watched the first two episodes of Girls, so I am still undecided about it. I have the others on my DVR though.
Amy Poehler looks so dramatic and unexpected- makes me love her even more! I saw Lea Michelle's dress got some slack on twitter but I personally think it's gorgeous!
P.S. also started watching Girls and thought it was so awkward (which it is) but now I'm slightly addicted...except to the creepy sex maniac- he's awful.
as much as i love the costumey stuff, i think my favorite is the simple and elegant green gown on dianna.
Chic on the Cheap

I don't typically follow these sort of events but I love all the outfits you shared. I'm so partial to the lovely black gowns, especially Amy Poehler's, but I love all the gold as well. That yellow dress is perfection on Solange Knowles.

I think Solange might have been my favorite because she looked amazing from head to toe! I also loved Jessica Alba, Ginnifer Goodwin, Camilla Belle and Nina Dobrev!
Claire Danes was a favorite of mine as well. So you didnt like the first to episodes of Girls?! I thought every episode so far has been stellar. Glad you stuck with it :)

I cannot get enough of Girls! Have you ever seen Tiny Furniture? Also by Lena Dunham. I feel like I'm living that now - I'm sure you can identify with being in a post grad delirium!
Thanks for the Met breakdown, I didn't even bother to seek it out myself!

I second that on Cate B. Wow, she is fantastic. Envious.
