As you may know, those of you who follow me on
Twitter and
Instagram, I recently started a new job! And while part of me is still a little sad that I didn’t snag my dream academic job teaching early modern British and European history to eager undergrads, I have to say that my new position is nothing short of amazing! I’m working on the campus of my alma mater, the University of Alberta (where I did my BA and MA before heading off for doctoral studies at Yale) and my position involves a salary that’s, frankly, much higher than I could have hoped for as an assistant or associate professor at all but a few schools, and revolves around working daily with graduate students across campus in an advocacy role. Having spent the last eight years of my life as a graduate student, I feel like this is an area that I am both passionate about and very experienced in. So I’m content at this point and really looking forward to all the challenges and rewarding experiences that I think this new position will provide. Although I am still keeping an eye on post docs and the academic job market, at least for the next year or so.
But enough about that. Here are shots of two of my first week of work outfits. Can I also just say that I love being in an office where jeans are encouraged and not relegated to casual Friday?

I am so happy for you. I know how hard it can be to find a good job that pays well. And I'm sure that you will land your dream job someday.

The average salary for an associate prof at the U of A is $106,384. Congrats if your making that much but I doubt it
Well the U of A, which I know pays well, is not hiring History faculty in my field and has not been for quite some time (hence my qualification of "at all but a few schools." That means that the majority of positions I am applying for are at much smaller schools, primary in the US (where there is simply just more hiring going one - although not much) and actually, yes, the salary range there is lower. Associate professors typically make around $48,000 to $58,000. And it becomes even lower when one takes into consideration that, as such jobs are south of the border and employers would be willing to negotiate a visa for me, no such consideration be given to my spouse so the loss of that combined salary while we negotiated a visa for him (which also involves a fair measure of legal fees) would be quite substantial. So, actually, my salary is comparable to what I would be making as a junior academic. One also needs to consider benefit packages and the costs associated with research, etc. as an academic. It's nice to know that's how much one makes at the U of A as a prof but really not terribly relevant to me.
