Day to Night

I love how easily this dress transitions from day to night – with these cut out sleeves all I have to do is pop off my requisite work blazer or cardigan and, BLAMO, party time. It’s just that easy folks.

The dress is definitely a potential New Years Eve outfit option as well...although I don't imagine I'll be doing much of anything exciting this year. I start teaching on Wednesday and am boarding a plane to New Orleans at midnight on Wednesday night and just feel like I have one thousand and one things to get done before that all happens so my night this evening may consist of popcorn, a bottle of bubbly, and writing a lecture on the history of Mughal India. Yup, good times.

What are your New Years Eve plans?

I`m a Professional Idiot

This is why you don’t get your Mogwai wet.

Also, this is the greatest t-shirt ever.

Paired with a blazer and some skinny jeans, it says a) I’m wearing a blazer so I may mean serious business and b) it’s a Gremlins shirt and that usually means that the person wearing it is fully prepared to go to a friend’s pizza birthday party, have a few gin drinks and refuse to stop waxing poetic about the awesomeness of Gremlins … which really just reinforces point A.

I told you I meant business, just not the kind you thought. The idiot kind.

Things That Are Pickled

This was a weird day. I went to friend’s house for some vegetarian chili and left with a jar of pickled carrots. Don’t ask.

Velvet!

I recently visited an amazing pop up vintage shop hosted by Edmonton’s own The Pretty Secrets. Well, I picked up this fancy velvet blazer there. I feel so preppy and, well, Yale-ish in this baby. And I really haven’t like that since I left Yale. So, really, this blazer is like a freaking time machine!

In other news, I paid a visit to the University I'll be teaching a class at in the Spring and had a lovely time meeting with faculty and scoping out my classroom - I'm really looking forward to it!

Feature

I was recently featured in a local magazine with a bunch of other local fashion bloggers. It was great fun. You can check out the full article here.

I Moved

The new apartment is all set up! Moving actually went pretty smoothly this time around…I’m still a little shocked about that. But, anyways, here’s my new pad.

Cocktails!

And this is what I wore under the coat in my last post (I was headed to a fundraiser/cocktail event). As you can see from the title, the open bar/free cocktail aspect of this whole thing was very enticing for me.

Frozen Lady Balls

Even though the weather here in Edmonton has gotten a bit too cold for this jacket, when my helpmeet and I were asked to attend a fundraising/cocktail event a few weeks ago I couldn’t resist wearing it out, and freezing my lady balls off in the process. Totally worth it as far as I’m concerned.

Ever since I cut my hair short last year I've been thinking that I should incorporate more hair accessories into my looks. Well, as if they could read my mind, online hair accessory retailer Sproos Shop sent me this delightfully romantic and edgy hair band. And I'm smitten. I feel so Grecian in it and, of course, I'm a huge fan of the studs.

And now Sproos Shop wants to give a little something away to readers of Sartorial Sidelines!

Follow the steps below and be entered for a chance to win one of two $10 gift cards (Sproos is very affordable so that $10 really will get you a long way).

Angry Face

This blouse with its adorable cat print never fails to put a smile on my face (not in these photos though - this is my angry face. And I wear it a lot). Even when I’m drowning in a sea of unpacking, work meetings to see to, and a stack of world history lectures to write in advance of my teaching gig this January.

And, for anyone interested in my academic activities as a historian, I was featured on the American Historical Association's website yesterday - you can read the feature here.

Leather Loves

I think I’ve recently mentioned my all-consuming love for faux leather accents this fall?

Leather Loves

Are you into this fall’s faux leather accents?

In other local happenings news, I recently attended an event celebrating the launch of AMOR jewelry and Suka Clothing's new collections at Edmonton’s own Bamboo Ballroom – check out the blog on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for more on that...BTW, it was amazing and the clothing was perfection.

In unrelated to fashion news - I was featured in the American Historical Association's Member Spotlight this week! You can check it out here and learn all about my work as a historian and academic.

Winter Warmth

Chilly weather means the return of my thrifted wool skirt originally from J Crew. This red number is the perfect fall piece and works great in the office. And a recent Zara purchase (I’m nuts for the little faux leather shoulder bits) is the ideal top to pair with it.

In unrelated news, I was recently informed that an article I submitted for publication consideration has been accepted! The article is based on a chapter of my dissertation and I've been working on it since last December so I am pretty pleased that it will be published.

Preparations for my January teaching gig are also in full swing - I've written upwards of 7 lectures so far (33 need to be written in total but I feel really good about having made a start of it so early).
