Who Didn't Hit a Snag at the SAGs

Yeah, I know. My word play is getting decidedly less sparkling. Gimme a break, I was super sick all week and Connecticut got hit with another massive snow fall that resulted in 1/2 of my committee not being able to make it to my chapter conference (which I didn't find out before I hauled my sorry sick self to campus by taking a 30 minute walk through giant snow banks) and the whole thing had to get rescheduled for this coming Thursday.

And now on to the SAG awards. Here are my picks for best and worst dressed:

My Favorites

Winona Ryder - she was probably my favorite part of Black Swan and even though I'm usually not one for big white dresses that may be confused with wedding gowns, I'm totally digging this

Mila Kunis - she looks perfect in this McQueen

Kyra Sedgwick - this is Thierry Mugler (who I adore) and the gals at Go Fug Yourself describe it as a "black velvet strapless with an intriguingly Maleficent-y neckline" and if Maleficent is involved I'm totally all in

Jane Krakowski - she looks gorgeous and I love all the glitz of the sequins and the overall fun factor of the dress, she's obviously very pregnant (and glowing) but this is very "let's get martinis at 3 in the afternoon" and I love that

Dianna Agron - I think this is an absolutely adorable dress and I love the cut of it

Christina Hendricks - I just love that this is sort of witchy and sparkly and very femme fatale and think she looks radiant

Annette Bening - seriously, she just looks amaze balls

My Less-Than-Favorites

Natalie Portman - I can't quite put my finger on what exactly I don't like about this but it seems a little matronly and doesn't really do her beautiful pregnant figure much justice

Melissa Leo - she looked so amazing at the Globes...I guess I was just expecting more and this is just doing odd things to her figure and, even for me, is a bit too shiny

Julie Bowen - seriously, this lady (who is so hilariously funny and gorgeous) just can't seem to catch a break when it comes to red carpet fashion. C'mon, a pant suit?!

Angie Harmon - sigh. I love Angie Harmon (well, I probably loved her on Law and Order more than I actually love her...also, I really really miss Law and Order) but this is too much. Too much pink, too much frill, too much tulle and she's lost in it.

Eshakti

I was recently approached by Eshakti to write a review – and, of course, I said yes because I regularly visit their website and swoon over their vast collection of coats, dresses, skirts, blouses, pants, etc. I selected a maxi dress, this lovely faux-wrap embroidered maxi dress from a wide selection of available products. One of my favorite features of Eshakti is that for a small additional charge you can send in all your relevant measurements when buying an article of clothing and they will ensure that it comes to you with all those measurements built in – how great is that? So I took full advantage of this service and was sent this lovely dress that I couldn’t not be happier with.

As you can see, it has a very loose, flowy fit to it that will be so comfortable and chic come the summer months. The quality of the garment itself is high with delicate cap sleeves and a slightly flared skirt, all in 100% woven twill cotton.

I am so happy with the garment that I just put in another order to Eshakti for a new LBD that I will of course be sharing with you!

Read My Sequins

Let’s consider this another exercise in dressing down sequins – pairing a subtly sequined tank with jeans, a camel boyfriend cardigan, and a sporty watch. You also get a healthy dose of photographer thumb on the left (you’re welcome) and a peak at the cute little key necklace that my helpmeet slipped in my Christmas stocking.

Many readers comment on my book shelves (I’m a total bibliophile) and since it seems like people really value the idea of an extensive home library, here are some book filled spaces that I’ve been crushing on.

Adventures is Slush

Soon after one of the impressive snowfalls that hit New England recently all of it started to melt (a few days later it snowed again and this time it all froze over and was here to stay for good). This was my sartorial response to that initial melting: kooky rain boots, fingerless gloves, and shorts and tights.

boots: Laila Rowe / shorts: H&M / gloves: Aldo

I was also looking back through my archive of “inspiration” photos this evening and I came across this images from Dior’s Spring 2008 collection and was instantly overwhelmed by their beauty and Gustav Klimt themes.

English Market

Readers will know how much a I love visiting a certain auction house in Norwalk and browsing through their massive collection of vintage clothing and antique wares. Recently I found a microcosm of this magical place right here in New Haven. I give you English Market, a fabulous store filled with vintage and antique furniture, jewelry, clothes, and a whole array of other knick knacks. I’m in heaven.

And here are a few New Haven (I always think the town looks so pretty covered in snow) randoms to complete things.

In the Red

I got this Nicole Millers dress at JC Penney a while ago and have always found it sort of difficult to style (not really sure why, I always just felt a little off in it even though I got lots of compliments on it) but I think I solved it: tights, boots, a cardigan, and a statement watch from the Museum of Modern Art. I think it all adds up to a good teaching outfit and is perfect for hitting up a colloquium or having a meeting with my adviser.

Get Your Sequins On

I got me some shiny new shoes! Two of my favorite things, the color black and sequins, have come together in these lovely little flats. I was also cleaning out my jewelry and realized that my bird necklace had fallen behind my dresser (you know you have too many necklaces when one goes missing and you don’t even notice for like a month) – so it’s been rescued and can now reappear in my outfit posts!

I also have another video review ready for you, this time on dry shampoo (which I actually recorded pre-Christmas and then totally forgot about. I’m just dropping the ball over the place this year).

Wishing For a Holiday Party

The holidays are officially over, the themed party invitations have all dried up, and my tree is no longer on display. And all I want to do now is throw on a shiny, sparkly dress, some dazzlingly accessories, and flirty shoes and hit a holiday party. And I’ve got a long wait before that happens. Boo.
